AST History

Here at AST we are proud to say that this year we are celebrating our 50th year of designing and engineering solutions for our customers! That’s some feat in many turbulent years!

Bernard Allwood, Jack Searle & Hugh Timney established Allwood, Searle and Timney Ltd in 1960, predominantly to provide a contract Design and Engineering solution for the nuclear power station manufacturing industry. At the time this was unheard of but as the business built so did the reputation of AST. Other industries soon embraced this new solution.

By 1970, the Company employed around 200 engineers and designers. It’s unlikely that there are any nuclear facilities, UK steel mills or UK Automotive manufacturing plants that still don’t have machines designed by AST.

In the 1980s, AST were not only still employing over 200 people but also working in the Design and Engineering of rolling stock. The support provided by AST’s designers and engineers in this sector mean that there are very few rail vehicles on the UK railways that did not, at some point during this period, have design input by one of Allwood, Searle and Timneys Ltd’s engineers.

In 1994, Allwood, Searle and Timney Ltd was reformed to create AST Resourcing Ltd as it is today, complete with its sister company, AST Recruitment. Together, they successfully continue to offer Design and Engineering services to many diverse industries.

As part of the celebration of 50 years of AST we have recorded an interview with one of the founders of AST, Mr Hugh Timney. In his own words he tells you a brief history of how it all began and progressed to where we are today!  To listen to this press PLAY>

AST Software

AST Resourcing’s CAD choice is customer driven and we have multiple seats of the following CAD systems:

  • AutoCAD
  • Catia V6/V5/V4.2
  • CoCreate
  • Microstation
  • Pro Engineer
  • Solid Edge
  • Solid Works
  • Unigraphics NX

This is not an exhaustive list. As AST is customer driven we procure software for specific projects to our customers’ requirements. We can supply more seats to complete your projects. Be assured also that all designers working on each specific package will not only be time served designers/draughtsmen but also formally trained and more than competent on the software used.

AST Hardware

AST only invest in the very best level of computer workstation hardware as this is one of the main tools of our trade. We understand the benefit of high performance, specialist hardware and with today’s technology enhancements there is no excuse for slow processing and poor equipment specifications. Our commitment to continually invest in our hardware ensures we are always one step ahead of the competition.

Throughout the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Visualisation software we have maintained hardware upgrades as an essential component to our business. Being part of this revolution from the start, AST’s team understand, better than most, what is required to deliver a powerful and reliable workstation. Finding the right partner to supply our equipment has always been challenging but in 2006 AST selected our latest partner, Workstation Specialists (Formerly CAD2), as the sole supplier of our CAD, FEA and visualisation hardware. This relationship has grown and throughout our offices you will see only quality WS specification workstations in use.

All workstations are built using the highest grade of technology, and 100% certified for professional CAD/CAM/CAE use.

Typical Workstation Specification
  • Intel® Multi-Core 64Bit Processors
  • Min. 8GB High Speed System Memory
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX Professional Workstation Grade Graphics Cards
  • High Performance Data Hard Disk Drives

AST Facilities

In June 2009, AST opened its new headquarters at Keys Business Village in Cannock, Staffordshire. The state-of-the-art business complex was developed specifically for the technology sector and has many advantages.

Key benefits are:

  •  LG3 lighting for PC work
  •  Cat 5 and 6 cabling throughout our areas. Our network is segregated from the buildings network to achieve MoD Security criteria
  • Comfort cooling
  • ADT Secured and Alarmed
  • Full CCTV monitoring and perimeter security in the evening
  • On-Site Storage/Workshop Facility

As you can see if you click here, AST’s new facility has the capacity for any large scale project and the ability to expand if required. At the end of the second quarter of 2010 our Derby studio is to be re-located to this facility to centralise all of our work.

We have also reserved a workshop studio measuring 260 sq m. This is proposed for large-scale contracts requiring storage and display of Mock-Ups and military vehicles. If this is of interest, please do not hesitate to ask as it is available on a first come first served reservation basis.

If you would like to see for yourself we will be proud to show you around.
